On a busy New York highway, a small Chihuahua named Bean found himself far from home.

Startled by a neighbor’s larger dog, Bean slipped through a hole in the fence and onto the Staten Island Expressway, resulting in a tense but heartwarming rescue.

Quick-Thinking Drivers to the Rescue

Bean’s dash through the traffic was caught on video by a driver named Katie Montello.

The tiny dog’s risky moves concerned passing drivers, and several, including Ella and nurse Caitlin McGinley, stopped their cars to help.

As Bean ran across the expressway, people worked together to keep him safe.

They put their cars between Bean and the traffic, giving him a shield from the fast-moving vehicles.

After some scary moments, McGinley used a jacket and a tote bag to scoop up the frightened Chihuahua safely.

A Happy Ending

Social media played a big role in getting Bean back to his owner, Tammy Richardson.

Soon after the rescue, Richardson deeply thanked the people who stopped to save Bean, showing her appreciation for their efforts.

In light of Bean’s harrowing adventure, pet experts remind us to always check our fences and gates for potential escape routes.

It’s also helpful to keep updated tags on our pets’ collars and consider microchipping for an added layer of security.

This way, if our pets do take an unexpected journey, they’ll have a better chance of being returned safely.
